Flight Zone Àger

We are in front of an exceptional flight area for the practice of Free Flight. Located in the region of La Noguera, province of Lleida, it spans the entire valley between the peak of the Serra del Montsec (border between the regions of Noguera and Pallars Jussà) and the Serra del Port d’Àger.

To the west it is bordered by the Noguera Ribagorçana river and the Canyelles swamp and to the east by the Noguera Pallaresa river and the Camarasa dam. The maximum height of Montsec is the peak of Sant Alis, at 1678 m.

The valley has an East-West orientation, with the Montsec slope facing south, which creates fantastic dynamic flight possibilities. Thermal conditions are particularly favorable at noon.

There are several prepared takeoffs and landings, and there is no problem in finding alternative landings in case of need.

The accesses to the take-offs and landings are marked by signs on the forest track, making access very easy, including the first time.

With a 30-year free-flying tradition, the area has hosted national and international championships, especially the World Hang-Gliding Championship in 1995, giving an international projection that makes the area frequented by flyers from all over the world.

ENCLOUSURES

Access to the enclosures is via an asphalt track, which starts at the west exit of the village next to the cemetery. It is perfectly passable for any type of tourist vehicle. A few kilometers later, after passing Can Maciarol, we will see a signposted turnoff to the right that takes us to the landing field known as Camp de la T (from the air it has the shape of a T). Continuing along the main track, after a few rather sharp curves, we arrive at:

COLL D’ARES, known as ROPER.

It is a very wide and clean space. It allows preparing a multitude of flyers at the same time, with a useful output of more than 50 m.It has several sleeves and bands to control the wind.The orientation is south, allowing departure with a westerly crosswind. If there is a very pronounced trend from the east, it is slightly leeward, so it is preferable to continue along the track until the flight of Sant Alis. The difference in level to the campsite is 900 m. and to Camp de la T 850 m. (continue walking east there is another flight with 50 m. more height. It is called Competition and it is oriented slightly S-W. COORDINATES: 31T 313555, 4657599 If we continue along the track, already at the summit of Montsec, we reach the highest peak of it:

RAUDORAL, known as Sortida Nova.

It allows us to go out without having to climb to the top of Montsec and climb back up if the conditions permit. It is a clean ramp, which allows several paragliders to be deployed at the same time, although the exit is made one at a time. The orientation is South and it is the flight where the breeze first blows as the slope heats up. With easterly winds it is leeward and its use is not recommended. The difference in level to the landing of the campsite is 500 m., to Camp de la T is 450 m.

Continuing along the road, we leave behind the Camp de 300 (see landings), and we meet another detour to the right that indicates an alternative flight. If we follow the detour we will stop at:

GABRIELÓ, known as TABLONES.

It is a flight with a very wide area to be able to deploy paragliders and wings. The start is made from a single point, and we have to keep a close eye on the 3 indicator tapes, as there can be difficult conditions where the wind plays tricks on us. The orientation is south. Its use in westerly winds should be avoided. It is a very useful flight when the meteorological wind from the North does not let us leave the summit. The difference in level to the campsite is 550 m. and to Camp de la T 500 m.

If we continue to the top of Montsec we arrive at Coll d’Ares, with an impressive view of the Pyrenees. To the left there is a trail that goes down the north face, which we will not follow. About 200 m. and at the edge of the slope, we will see a large area with a large parking lot.

We have reached:

SANT ALÍS,known as LA PEDRA.

Geodetic vertex, it offers us an incredible view: from Montseny, Montserrat, Mont Caro, Serra de Prades, Serra del Montsant, Moncayo, Serra de Guara and the Pyrenees, from Navarre to Girona. In the most prominent part we will find a ramp to take off, currently in disuse, so it is an unsafe and abrupt takeoff. Just to the left is the exit through which we can fly without any problem.The orientation is South-East, so if it is west we will not use it. The difference in level to the village of Àger is 1050 meters and to the T field, 1000 m.

Other envelopes exist, but they are not sufficiently prepared or indicated. Only with flying companies that know them and with favorable conditions we will use them.

LANDINGS

There are 2 landings prepared as such, although the valley is a succession of fields that in a moment of need we can use to guarantee a safe landing.

MASIEROL PRACTICE FIELD

On the right side of the road that goes towards the T field and the Àger pass. You have to watch out for easterly winds, as there is a high voltage cable in the approach area.

CÀMPING

It is located next to the Vall d’Àger campsite.
It is accessed from the road at the height of half of the village. There is an indicator. It is a rectangular field of about 200 x 50 m., with a practically East-West orientation.
It has a sleeve and several ribbons, the floor is low grass and dirt. You have to be careful with the turbulence produced by the vegetation in the North corner.

PLA D’AGULLÓ LANDING

It is frequently used as a hang glider landing due to its dimensions, and because there are no obstacles in the vicinity of the field.

It is accessed from the road that goes from Àger to Agulló.

It is a rectangular field of about 300 x 300 m., with a practically East-West orientation, but its dimensions allow for a North-South landing

IMPORTANT: Do not use if seeded. It can be used from July to October.
